About KYRBA

The Kentucky Telephone Association was established in 1937 as a non-profit organization to promote and support the general interests and welfare of the telecommunications industry in the Commonwealth. This is still our goal.

The industry has undergone enormous changes and growth since the Kentucky Telephone Association was established. Advancements in technology, including the growth of computer applications and fiber cable, expanding service areas, increasingly complex regulatory requirements and competitive services has fueled many of these changes. Throughout this time, our association has served the industry by fostering communication and cooperation among its member companies to improve their services and products.

In 2011, we changed our name from the Kentucky Telephone Association to the Kentucky Telecom Association and adopted a new logo to recognize our members offer more than wireline telephone service and the many changes in our industry in the recent past. Now, in 2023, we have once again adopted a new name and logo to reflect our members focus on delivering world class fiber broadband to rural Kentuckians. The Kentucky Rural Broadband Association remains focused on expanding broadband access and broadband deployment to some of the most rural, high-cost areas of the Commonwealth. By growing broadband deployment and adoption, and closing the digital divide, we will grow opportunities for all Kentuckians.

KYRBA Members Visit Kentucky Congressional Delegation to Discuss Universal Service Funding

Members of the Kentucky Rural Broadband Association recently participated in the NTCA-The Rural Broadband Association’s Telecom Executive Policy Summit in Washington, D.C. During our time on Capitol Hill, KYRBA members met with the congressional offices of Congressman Comer, Congressman Guthrie, Congressman Barr and Congressman Rogers as well as the Office of Leader McConnell to discuss universal service funding, contribution reform, the Farm Bill and broadband grant tax reform.

KYRBA appreciates the continued support of the Kentucky's congressional delegation for our community-based rural broadband providers. The Kentucky Rural Broadband Association embraces its role as Kentucky's premier state trade association for rural broadband providers and our members strive to serve their respective communities by deploying enhanced fiber networks to improve the quality of life and economic opportunities available to rural Kentuckians. KYRBA will continue to work with the members of our congressional delegation to meet the needs and demands of our rural communities as we seek to close the digital divide in the Commonwealth.

KYRBA Weighs in on Kentucky Office of Broadband Development's Initial BEAD Proposals

KYRBA recently weighed in on the Kentucky Office of Broadband Development's Volume I Initial BEAD Proposal released in September. The Kentucky Office of Broadband Development will have until later this month to respond to the public comments submitted by various stakeholders.

KYRBA weighed in on the proposed challenge process and broadband availability map that will be used to select eligible locations for federal broadband dollars through the BEAD program. It is imperative that the broadband maps and challenge process are used effectively in order to limit overbuilding locations and areas that already have fiber broadband as well as the need to direct funding to the unserved and underserved areas of the Commonwealth of Kentucky that have the greatest need for federal broadband infrastructure dollars.

The Kentucky Office of Broadband Development just released its draft Initial Proposal Volume II. This proposal is the essential policy document for the way in which the Office of Broadband Development will implement the BEAD program in the Commonwealth. Policy decisions such as establishing project service areas, setting the extremely high cost per location threshold and the low cost affordability option for broadband providers will be determined in Volume II. KYRBA is currently reviewing the draft of Volume II and will submit public comments on behalf of our association members.
